{"id":211,"date":"2012-12-02T21:25:52","date_gmt":"2012-12-03T02:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/danvanfleet.com\/index.php\/voltage-tester-on-the-cheap\/"},"modified":"2013-02-13T21:37:30","modified_gmt":"2013-02-14T02:37:30","slug":"voltage-tester-on-the-cheap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danvanfleet.com\/index.php\/voltage-tester-on-the-cheap\/","title":{"rendered":"Voltage tester on the cheap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I was installing some new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=danvanfleetco-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Insteon&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\">Insteon<\/a> devices to control lights other stuff.\u00a0 I needed to determine if the circuit was energized.\u00a0 I have a large variety of test equipment that could answer that question, DVM, VTVM, Probe, and just a normal analog volt meter.\u00a0 The thing that caught my eye was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000R8KBOK\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=danvanfleetco-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000R8KBOK\">Christmas light tester<\/a>, it has a voltage proximity detector built into it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Keeper-01201-Complete-Fixing-Miniature\/dp\/B000R8KBOK\/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1354476566&amp;sr=1-1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/danvanfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/image.png?resize=190%2C244\" width=\"190\" height=\"244\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> I wondered how many people had one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=danvanfleetco-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Insteon&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\">these<\/a> and didn&#8221;t know they had a rather sophisticated voltage tester for home use.<\/p>\n<p>It works great, make sure the LED lights up to confirm the three LR44 batteries are good, and point the loop nose of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=danvanfleetco-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Insteon&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\">Light Keeper Pro<\/a> near the wire.\u00a0 Beeping means don&#8221;t touch the wire!\u00a0 It only works an inch away from the wire, so touch the insulated part of the wire with the nose, or get it real close.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody should own one of these, well at least until the LED bulbs take over the season.
