I had been tracking a wire fraudster who hit a client of mine, but the trail had gone cold. Today, ready to give up, I did one last search. HA, the fraudster registered 4 new domains. He’s still active!
That meant there were up to 4 title companies who were actively being targeted. It’s the end of the month. This is real live action. So as I do, I sent each of them a message through their website alerting them to this current attack.
Here is how it works, say your company is Jones Title, jonestitle.com, the criminal will register jonestltle.com to spoof your company. I see the criminal has registered steweart.com to spoof stewart.com. Have you been spoofed? You can help.
I have a not bulletproof way of knowing when and where this guy is going to hit. What I need are more domains that have been registered to spoof a title companies domain. There are only so many places to register domains. Accounts are needed to do that. I use that information to dig out who’s going to be hit next.
If you have ever been hit by a wire fraudster, who used some misspelling of your domain name as a part of their attack. Would you mind sending me the domain name used? I want to see if I can expand and maybe even automate my alert system.
