ProForm filtering Lookup tables when updating

clip_image001There are a number of methods to update lookup tables in SoftPro ProForm Classic 15 and 20. Using the normal ProForm interface is the most common. We can’t use the asterisk (*) filtering where * is used as a match all filter since the update would put that in the Code field. There is another solution which can also be used to pull a lookup record.

When the Lookup table window displays, begin typing the Lookup Code, the list will rapidly follow along selecting rows as letters are typed.

For example on this Real Estate Agents/Brokers Screen where the lookup entry was pulled by simply typing the correct Agent/Broker Look-up Code and tabbing out of the field.

Let’s add a NMLS number.

In the Agent Name NMLS# Field a number is entered.

Then the lookup table was brought up by clicking in the Code field and pressing F9

If your lookup table looks like this one without a Code for every record, you are missing out on a valuable feature.

After pressing F9 the first column match text can be typed.

For this example as I began typing the code I had a match in 3 characters.

Clicking Replace Entry will update the record.

How codes are designed change how this feature feels to a user.  I tend to like Name Address combinations, some people use an incremental number.  I find that method to provide a difficult user interface.

ProTip: if only one entry is typically used in a lookup table, that entry should always be the top most entry in the table.  That allows users to press F9 <Enter> as fast as they possibly can, ProForm will select the first entry in the list as fast as it possibly can.
